Best Friend Forever Review: A Dog-and-dating Sim On Nintendo Switch, PC

Best Friend Forever, the visual novel and heartwarming dog adoption game, has been let off its leash and is now out in the world for everyone to play. Starcolt’s pet sim lets you befriend, adopt, and train some very good puppers in a world where everyone is dog-obsessed. As someone who still hasn’t managed Meetic to convince their landlord to have pets in the house, Best Friend Forever is a welcome pick-me-up. As is often the case of dating sim games, there are choices-a-plenty to determine to which characters you’ll become closer. Another major problem Best Friend Forever has lies in its dialogue based gameplay.

If you’ve ever wanted to move to an idyllic location in pursuit of romance and adopting a beautiful canine companion, Best Friend Forever is what you need – even if the Switch version is currently a little ruff at launch. Mixing romance with murders and the living dead, World End Syndrome is a gripping story that will make you shiver but… Honestly, Best Friend Forever feels like it’s having a constant identity crisis. It feels like developers were throwing things at the walls to see what stuck, but then decided the pile of thrown stuff now sitting on the floor was good enough. There’s no way I can recommend this title in its current state, and even if it was bug-free, Best Friend Forever still wouldn’t be worth your time. Throughout the game, you’ll be able to spend your time getting to know your comrades and strengthening your bonds, which will allow your character to acquire even more abilities that would prove useful in battle. One is an adventure mode that allows players to interact with other characters and earn their trust, which will come into play as their relationships change throughout the game. The other is a battle mode that places the player in a grid where they’ll fight against demons with the use of mech suits. The characters are represented by a jarring realistic image of each bird, which adds to the hilarious yet surreal nature of the game. You’ll meet plenty of quirky characters in this surreal anime-like visual novel centered around the KFC mascot. In order to win the heart of the Colonel, you’ll have to impress him with your cooking knowledge and abilities. In addition to individual run-ins and dates, there are also group hangouts, because everyone in the Rainbow Bay dog parents community apparently knows each other.

Walks are also a vital part of dog care, and in Best Friend Forever, they’re the best way to spend more time with your pup and run into Rainbow Bay’s flirty residents who each have their own four-legged companion. After you’ve gone through the tough process of choosing which pup you’d like to adopt, you’ll need to learn the ropes of dog care. In the demo available on Steam, I chose Cheeseball, a smart and spritely Shiba Inu who has a cheeky streak underneath all that fur. Over the course of 15 weeks, you’ll need to look after and train your new fluffy friend in order to pass Paw Academy, proving you two are a perfect match.

Best Friend Forever allows you to take care of your dog and improve their skills by scheduling several different tasks throughout the days. From the indie video game to the dominating AAA that needs a 1000Gb day one update, we’ve got you covered. Choose between four adoptable shelter pups to take on your journey through laughter, love and existential crises – a Maltese, a Shiba Inu, a Mutt and a Staffordshire Terrier! Each pup has their own backstory, personality, strengths and weaknesses, just like any other shelter pup in need of love and a good home.

The PC stumbles through an awkward interaction with a service dog and has to reconcile their reasons for moving to Rainbow Bay with one of their new friends’ line of work. The game never gets bogged down by overly-serious examinations of trauma or intense emotional pain, but these things are present, which helps it feel grounded. Best Friend Forever is more focused on adopting, bonding with and training the player’s dog than falling in love — and that’s a good thing. They focus mainly on character development and plot rather than action and gameplay mechanics. When Sims meet they are all strangers and become acquaintances when they meet. When their Friendship meter goes up, more interactions such as «Ask about day» and «Discuss interests» will unlock with a lot more friendly and funny interactions.

When he’s not busy writing, he can be found playing games on his Switch or listening to new records. Maglam Lord is the latest offering of Japanese game developer Felistella. The game seamlessly combines dating sim elements with action-RPG aspects. In Maglam Lord, the protagonist, named Killzerk, needs to fight his way through a world where gods and demons wreak havoc. Because Killzerk’s race is at risk of extinction, he must also find a partner in his futuristic world.

This includes everything from video games and K-pop to movies and gadgets. Boatmeal is not up for adoption in reality, and will be living a long and happy life as a member of my family. Still, I am sorry that Best Friend Forever’s players won’t at least get to experience Boatmeal’s unconditional love in virtual form. The game is still fairly enjoyable in a gently simple way though, primarily due to its premise, and any of the available dog adoptees will bring you joy. There’s Titan, a shy four-year-old Maltese; Blocker, a rescued mutt who needs a bit of love; Cheeseball, a cheeky Shiba Inu pup whose previous owners gave her up; and Cardigan, a grey Staffordshire Terrier stray.

An entire run of the game can be completed in a few hours, so I played through several times with several different characters, answering the questionnaire differently and playing with the few different character types. I even picked different dogs as my companions, but we’ll get into that later. Best Friend Foreveris set in the fictional town of Rainbow Bay, a cozy little village where pretty much every resident has a dog. The player creates their character, forming the basis for their personality that will shape what residents are available to romance. It is, after all, a dating sim, and there are plenty of cute characters to flirt with.

Conversely, Best Friend Forever’s dog management system doesn’t quite hit the mark. At each in-game week’s end, you’ll schedule various training activities for your pup which impact various statistics measured in the delightfully-named ‘Bork Points’. Additionally, this is also when you ensure they’re adequately fed, watered and clean.
