How to Be a Successful Board Member

Being a board member requires an enormous amount of time and effort. It is important to be fully committed to the job regardless of the fact that it could be a long-term task that isn’t always visible or rewarding. Effective board members invest in the mission beyond meetings and are aware that their commitment is not limited to the boardroom. This can include fundraising and networking as well as serving as an ambassador for your organization. It is also beneficial for experienced board members to guide newer members to areas in which they can make the most contribution.

A board member who is successful builds an unwavering and trusting relationship with the executive leadership and provides critical feedback in a constructive way. A strong partnership is built on the ability to frame feedback in a constructive way and not in a negative way.

Board members must also be aware of their legal obligations and how to fulfill these obligations. This means that they must act in the best interests of the organization as well as its clients, and exercising reasonable care in their management of the organization’s assets, refraining from personal gain and complying with the organization’s internal rules and regulations.

Nonprofit board members are urged to make a financial donation in order to show their support for the mission of the organization and its clients. They should also actively take part in activities for developing resources like attending fundraisers or thanking donors, and hosting fundraisers at their homes or offices.
